The City God is likened to a celestial officer who reports mortal affairs to the celestial court. In the ten hells of the underworld, the City God is sometimes seen at the first court of judgement. In the Mulian play, the City God stands out against villains and punish them for their evil deeds. In traditional Chinese theatre, a red-faced puppet or mask represents loyalty and bravery.
