Dressed in a Buddhist robe and headgear, this puppet depicts Fu Luobo, or his Buddhist name Mulian. He is the protagonist of the Mulian play who goes against all odds to save his mother from the deepest realm of the underworld. In the actual performance, he is often seen carrying a shoulder pole of scriptures and his mother’s ashes. With the help of the deities, he is also bestowed a metal staff which gives him the power to break through the gates of hell. The staff is also a powerful tool to execute the ritual of universal salvation of the purgatory.
