This is a painted face male puppet, or more specifically “red monkey” (honghou 红猴) as denoted by the markings on his face. He is middle-aged as he has black facial hair. From his grumpy expression, he may play an evil character or a fierce looking martial lord. This puppet can also play the famous character of Cheng Yaojin (程咬金), a general from the Tang dynasty.
